CUSTOMS ASSURANCES THAT GOODS DO NOT CONTAIN ASBESTOS

Australian Border Force have released Notice 2016/30 which will have a wide reaching impact on many importers.

With immediate effect, customers brokers are requires to make a declaration in relation to a large number of tariff classifications confirming that goods being imported do not contain asbestos.

In order for a broker to answer "no" to this question, suitable due diligence needs to be carried out and suppliers/importers will need to provide assurances that the goods do not container asbestos. This may be a simple as providing an email confirmation however some cases it may require testing and confirmation from a National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) recognised body.

We will provide as much guidance and assistance as possible and will be monitoring the impact on a shipment by shipment basis as Customs roles out this program.
